Our Take: Our Mission Is to Make The Gospel Music Cruise “Amazing” 20 MAY 2015
Welcome to the first edition of The Word, the monthly newsletter for The Gospel Music Cruise. Each month we will try to entertain and inform you about the cruise and about the world of gospel music. We invite your comments and suggestions, as this is YOUR newsletter. We want everyone who wishes to know about The Gospel Music Cruise to learn and enjoy.
One question that we have received a lot is how the cruise came to be. Well, every once in a while, an inspiration hits you hard and compels you to move forward. Such was the case with the inception of The Gospel Music Cruise. From the start, our sailings of The Jazz Cruise and The Smooth Jazz Cruise have featured a gospel music show, usually in the morning of the first full day at sea. These shows have always been one of the most popular events of those sailings. One day at the office we were discussing how popular those shows are and how wonderful the music is that makes those shows work. The inescapable next thought was whether or not a full-ship charter of gospel music could work. As if there were a hand from above directing our actions, in record time we assembled a first-class lineup and our customary Holland America Line ship, the m/s Eurodam.
The first thing that we did was ask our good friend Kirk Whalum and past cruise performer Regina Belle to host the cruise. Without Kirk’s involvement, we would have folded the plan. Then, with Kirk’s blessing and direction, we signed up the best gospel performers in the world today — Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Shirley Caesar, Tye Tribbett, Marvin Sapp, Take 6 and more. Selecting a ship was easy. Most of our guests just love the luxury and appointments of the Holland America ships. Their commitment to excellence is consistent with our program goals for this cruise, and they understand how we produce our cruises. We have never gone wrong with Holland America.
